Writing

Lex Morrow (she/her) is a poet and writer of short literary fiction living in Southern California. A recent graduate of Literature and Writing Studies with an affinity for Modernism, psychological realism, and the Gothic, her work is interested in the tensions, and unexplored territories, between literary tradition and experience. Her narratives strive to capture the entangled webs of memory, emotion, and desire, exploring the contradictions of growing up, femininity, identity, and relationships within contemporary culture. Fond of metaphor and nonlinearity, Lex enjoys form that lingers in ambiguity: the spaces between remembering and experiencing, thinking and acting, and the narratives told to us and those we tell ourselves. She can be found scrawling poetry by candlelight, proofreading manuscripts with one too many earl grey teas, or marking up a Clarice Lispector novel for her book club, Words & Winking Figs.

About

A recent graduate of Literature and Writing Studies but lifelong student of books, Lex Morrow understands the power of language, deep reading, and storytelling to construct, and transform, our realities and relationships. Her passion for stories led her to the halls of California State University San Marcos, where she analyzed and wrote a variety of texts, developing an understanding of communication’s role within cultural narratives of the past and present. Though she has written since she was a girl, it is here too where Lex penned her own creative work and accepted her fate as writer of fiction and poetry.Lex Morrow lives, writes, and edits from the Inland Empire of Southern California. Seeking to translate her analytical and interpersonal skills into the publishing industry, she finds inspiration assisting at a local non-profit for creatives and from the talented voices she collaborates with as a freelance copyeditor.

Words & Winking Figs Book Club

"I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked."

Born from Sylvia Plath's ever-resonant metaphor, this monthly book club explores how powerful images in fiction, like the fig tree for Plath's protagonist, plant roots in our mind, sprouting small portals we use to understand ourselves. With a focus on psychological and literary fiction, each month we perform a close-reading of a striking moment of imagery within the month's pick. In plucking a fruit from the tree and analyzing it with attention, we find "figments" of wisdom about the work and the world from which it grows.
